Part 12: Why is Jesus not the Prophet like Moses in Deuteronomy 18:18-19
You may ask, "Isn't Jesus the fulfillment of the prophecy in Deuteronomy 18:18-19 as written by the apostles?"
Let us examine their statement:
"For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from among his people.'" Acts 3:22-23 (NIV)
The apostles claimed that Jesus is the prophet like Moses mentioned in Deuteronomy 18:18-19, citing the words of Moses.
Readers need to understand that for the apostles to genuinely testify that God sent Jesus through their writings, they had to refer to God's words in the prophecies of the Old Testament concerning Jesus. An example is how they quoted God's word in Deuteronomy 18:18-19 in Acts 3:22-23.
If we examine the apostles' testimonies about Jesus and find that they are in line with God's word in the prophecy, then we can conclude that what they testify is true and that their writings in the New Testament are from God.
Conversely, if we discover any misinterpretation or omission of God's words in the prophecy, it would imply that the apostles intentionally wrote a false account about Jesus. In that case, the apostles themselves would be the false prophets they warned us about. Such an act would be the greatest deception ever perpetrated on humanity.
Returning to the apostles' claim that Jesus is the prophet mentioned in Deuteronomy 18:18-19, we must not forget that Jesus was brutally put to death. If he is a prophet and suffered a cruel death, it would appear that God's word in Deuteronomy 18:20 was fulfilled in him.
"But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death." Deuteronomy 18:20 (NIV)
The phrase "must be put to death" indicates that a prophet who speaks differently from what God has commanded or speaks in the name of other gods is deserving of death. God never spoke about sending a prophet who would die for the sins of others. Since Jesus (according to the apostles) was a prophet and was killed, it implies that his death was a result of his disobedience to God's commandments and speaking in the name of other gods. Therefore, he cannot be the prophet like Moses mentioned in Deuteronomy 18:18-19.
This demonstrates that the apostles of Jesus provided a false account of Jesus in their writings.
